This paper is a detailed study of the dynamic polarization of the protons in the waters of hydration in the lanthanum magnesium nitrate crystal (Nd, La)/sub 2/Mg/sub 3/(NO/sub 3/)/sub 12/24H/sub 2/O, which occurs when one saturates a microwave 'forbidden' transition that simultaneously flips a proton and a Nd/sup 3 +/ ion. The proton relaxation and the dynamics of the polarization process are discussed.
