The question of why some societies condone premarital sex while others restrict it has received a great deal of attention from anthropologists and psychologists, not to speak of social planners. We examine this question, and several pertinent hypotheses, with reference to data on the Ijo, a Nigerian people who reside in the Niger Delta area. We investigated two Ijo communities similar to each other in being "permissive," a descriptive category we will discuss below, but different in other respects. Our limited "controlled comparison" (Eggan 1954; Nadel 1955) offers the opportunity to analyze covariations within the same cultural idiom. On the basis of such microanalyses we can then reevaluate the conclusions drawn from cross-cultural comparisons. The restricted nature of our comparison is especially important for maintaining a "contextualized" understanding of concepts such as "lineage" and "household" (Comaroff 1980:31; Guyer 1981:104).
