1. The MRI showed that the previous cystic lesion had more than doubled in size and now appeared to have areas of solid enhancement. These imaging findings were now concerning for a rapidly growing malignancy, which upon further work-up proved to be a malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT).Kidney tumors account for 7% of all childhood malignancies. MRTs are a rare, aggressive type of tumor that account for less than 2% of all kidney malignancies [1]. It is generally diagnosed in children between 0 and 3 years of age [2]. This tumor generally presents as a large, centrally located lobular soft-tissue mass with hemorrhage, necrosis, and a calcified rim [1, 3]. Our patient’s initial MRI revealed a calcified vs. hemorrhagic lesion, only, with repeat imaging revealing more of the classic findings, thereby encouraging us to consider an oncologic process.
