Individuals may be trained to discriminate between vibratory stimuli that are contingent on their heart beats and vibratory stimuli that display the same temporal and physical properties as the contingent stimuli, but that are independent of their heart beats. Data derived from 1 experimental and 2 control groups suggest that the procedure employed in this demonstration may provide a useful means of assessing the ability of intact humans to detect normal variations in visceral activity.
