To say that Pellow’s work is timely is something of an understatement, particularly in the case of his attention to the phenomenon of the Green Scare and its opposition within the aforementioned movements. Pellow provides a nuanced take on the origins and nature of the Green Scare, which capitalizes on the extreme legal and ideological response to 9/11 and related acts of “terror,” and the methods used by these movements to counteract its chilling effect, an examination rendered even more incisive in light of the treatment of recent whistleblowers like Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden. While dealing with substantially complex subject matter, Pellow manages to sculpt a very accessible account of the formation and rise of the animal rights and radical earth movements, one facilitated by his extensive use of interviews with subjects central to both movements. Although Pellow does much interpretation of his own, he leaves ample space for the actors themselves to describe their experiences in relatively plain terms, dodging many of the pitfalls of academic jargon in the process. By leaving little between those accounts and the reader, Pellow provides highly relatable entry points for readers who may not be as familiar with the mechanics and the activists of these movements. Two areas in particular where Pellow excels are his keen self-awareness of his place within the animal rights and radical earth movements, and his similarly insightful examination of the contentious role that privilege plays in at once facilitating and complicating alliances between radical 178 Book Reviews
