This article examines the abolition of the Inner London Education Authority and the future of ’equal opportunities&dquo;’) initiatives in inner London. It is not meant as a definite guide to the future, rather it seeks to raise certain key issues and areas that may affect the likelihood of the development of any radical and progressive approaches to gender, ’race’ and class in education. It is also an attempt to develop an analysis which locates schooling within the wider arena of social policy and to see the abolition of the ILEA within a broader analysis of the restructuring of the welfare state. The article will examine the abolition of the ILEA and the transference of educational responsibilities to the inner London boroughs. It will consist of four main sections: the first will examine the abolition of the ILEA in the wider social and political context of the 1988 Education Reform Act; the second will look at ILEA’s anti-racist and anti-sexist statements; the third section will investigate the establishment of the new inner London education authorities and some of their approaches to ’equal opportunities’; whilst the final section will highlight the introduction of local management of schools and the effects of its implementation on the future of anti-sexist and antiracist educational developments.
