The article presents a study which examines the utility of the MetPLATE assay, a rapid enzymatic assay, for assessing the toxicity of leachates produced from wood products treated with heavy metal, containing wood preservatives. Since MetPLATE is specific to heavy metal toxicity and because it is a rapid assay, it has the potential to be a useful screening tool. Leachates from untreated southern yellow pine were found to be non-toxic to the MetPLATE test bacteria. The treated wood leachates all showed some degree of toxicity using MetPLATE.
