[long dash]Cells of a secretory type were found in large numbers in the gills of the eel and in smaller numbers in the gills of other teleosts; they were not found in the dogfish. These constitute a probable histologic basis for the branchial chloride secretion in the eel. at least, and probably in the marine teleosts. These cells are present in some fresh-water teleosts, but in these are possibly non-functional, or possibly so organized that they always secrete in opposition to the concentration gradient.
