The final goal of this study is to establish a lightweight method for detecting learners who do not fully understand state machine modeling. As an initial step in this research, this paper reports the results of an analysis of the behavior of learners who fail at modeling and a comparison of the differences with learners who succeed in modeling. In this study, a process mining technique was used to analyze learner behaviors, and a statistical testing method was used to confirm significant differences in the frequency of process events and transitions in the comparison. The results showed that learners who failed in modeling tended to describe states and transitions alternately.
