Nursing research is an essential component in advancing the nursing profession and improving patient care outcomes. It provides a scientific basis for identifying best practices in patient care, evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions and treatments, and promoting evidence-based nursing practices (Chien, 2019; Tingen et al., 2009). Moreover, nursing research seeks to explore the social and cultural aspects of health care, as well as patients' experiences and perspectives. Nursing research also shapes health policy and health care reform efforts (Ellenbecker & Edward, 2006). As a result, it is critical for nurses to have an understanding of research methods and be able to translate and implement evidence-based practices in their clinical practice. There are various research designs utilized in nursing research such as quantitative (eg, experimental studies, surveys, and case studies)(Ingham-Broomfield, 2014; Salvador, 2016) and qualitative methods that provide varying levels of evidence (DeSantis & Ugarriza, 2000; Squires & Dorsen, 2018). Experimental studies are considered the gold standard in nursing research as they often involve randomized control trials and blind or double-blind protocols, ensuring that results are reliable and rigorous (Hariton & Locascio, 2018). However, qualitative studies often provide a different perspective to quantitative methods that cannot be obtained through numerical data alone (Gelo et al., 2008). Despite the importance of nursing research there are challenges that must be addressed for it to have a greater impact on patient care.An important challenge in nursing research is the research capacity in many of our academic organizations. It is estimated that one-third of all nursing faculty will retire by 2025 (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2019). Faculty are needed to educate nursing students but also to conduct the research. Another important challenge is the lag time between the research and its implementation into practice. A common timeframe in the literature is that of 17 years from research results to practice implementation (Segrott et al., 2006). We must be better prepared to translate the research and implement it into practice. Finally, nurse researchers must be ready to collaborate with doctor of nursing practice colleagues and across disciplines to partner in implementation endeavors. Limited funding for nursing research is a major challenge, which can hinder the development and implementation of evidence-based practices in clinical settings (Kiley & Wysocki, 2020). Furthermore, limited access to research resources and a lack of support for nursing researchers can also impede progress in this field. This underscores the need for greater investment in nursing research to support the development of evidence-based practices.
