The growth rate of long bones was determined by daily serial measurements from X-rays and direct measurement of dissected bones of 680 chickens of various ages from three days'' incubation to 60 wks. after hatching. Most long bones contain no secondary centers of ossification. The proximal end of the metatarsus and the proximal and distal ends of the tibia were exceptions. The length of time between formation and resorption was calculated for the epiphyseal growth plate and midshaft cortex. The total life span of the growth plates ranged between 1.75 and 7.0 days, and the life span of the cortex ranged between 0.5 and 5 days during growing period. The large cone of uncalcified cartilage that filled the metaphysis during the first wk. disappeared rapidly as soon as the yolk sac was completely resorbed. Yolk sac metabolism may account for the failure of calcification and delay in cartilage resorption.
