A number of investigators, from the middle of the nineteenth century (Kolliker, 1854) to the third decade of the twentieth century (Weidenreich,'23) have given careful consideration to the basic, or fibrillar structure of human bone. In this group v. Ebner (1876) and especially Gebhardt ('01) should he mentioned, as Gebhardt's observations form the basis for the generally accepted modern textbook descriptions of the fibrillar arrangement in osseous tissue. Kolliker's earlier writings expressed the belief that the organic matrix of bone was the cartilage of the embryonic skeleton, in which calcium salts had been deposited. He stated further that this organic interstitial substance was granular in nature, rather than fibri1lar. l The differences between the histomorphology of cartilage and bone should have been an obvious problem, but were not mentioned. Later he accepted the fibrillar nature of ossein, and entered into the controversy concerning the location of the calcium salts in relation to the fibrillae and interfibrillar spaces. He believed that the fibrillae themselves are the bearers of the calcium salts, that is, that the mineral salts are in chemical union with the fibrillae, and are'Many authors appear to have been led to describe the bone as composed of filmrs, but quite incorrectly, for although the study of their development shown tlmt the ossifying paitR arc, to: L ccrt: liri extent, very disti~~ ctly fibrous, it is impossible to demonstrnte: iiiytliiiig of the sort in perfect bow.
