The failure of the Weimar Republic remains a paradigmatic case for empirical democratic theory. This paper analyses the conditions of Weimar in a systematic comparative manner in relation to 17 other European states in the inter-war period. A first step consists in the reduction of the observed complexity to ten characteristic and theo retically relevant ?key variables?. In this way a weighting of the respective factors also becomes possible. The results can be located in an ?analytical map of Europe?. Further steps reveal in ?most different Systems? and ?most similar Systems? research designs the potentially more universal and the more specific conditions of Weimar with regard to selected comparable cases. The results point, beyond these more general structure-related conditions, to some specific actor-related aspects.
