Telegraphic reports of 352 cases of tetanus were received by the Center for Disease Control for the years 1968 and 1969.1 Detailed surveillance reports of tetanus cases were received for 328 (93%) of the total cases, and data derived from analysis of these reports confirm that tetanus remains a lethal disease which affects inadequately immunized persons.During 1968 and 1969, 94% of the cases with a known history of immunization had had either no toxoid (84%) or a single (10%) toxoid vaccination; no proven cases of tetanus in fully im-munized individuals were reported. More than half of the cases were in persons over 50 years of age; this rate of incidence is approximately 5 times higher than that for persons less than 50 years of age (figure 1). Serologic surveys have shown lower levels of immunization in the middle-aged and elderly, and this may account, in part, for the higher incidence of tetanus in those over 50 [1, 2].
