So often, too, do we loseour youthful spirit of adventure in our preoccupationfor comfort and security. Not long ago our newspapersstated that no young doctors had offered for the position of medical officer to the Heard Islandexpedition. Otheradvertisements, calling for doctors for country hospitals, go unansweredevery day. Has modern life, with its emphasis upon sewerageand hot water systems, the amenitiesof city life and the glamour of higher degreesand diplomas, causedus to loseour spirit of adventure? On the credit side I believe that thereare improvements on the olden days. Many of the petty jealousies that formerly divided some of the membersof our profession are being replacedby friendlinessand better intra-professional fellowship. The war has undoubtedlycontributedto this, in that those who served in the forces and shared common hardshipsand discomforts becamemore tolerant of their professionalbrethren. Our British Medical Association has also done much to foster a good spirit among us. But it cannot be over-emphasizedthat the force of example by each and everyoneof us can do incalculable good, or harm, to the professionas a whole. There are many abroad today who take particular pleasurein discrediting us; we have been, and are still being, threatened with nationalizationand the loss of our freedom; and we arebeingtold repeatedlythat we have lost the high regard of the public that we have traditionally held. All this constitutesa challengeto us to raise and to maintain our ethical standards, which should be, as Cresar'swife, above suspicion.
