When electromyography was first used outside the research laboratories, it was for diagnostic purposes. Diseases of the motor system could be differ entiated by means of electromyography, and the extent and prognosis of a muscle paresis could be assessed. Today, electromyography has an established role in clinical neurology. In this application attention is, to a large extent, directed towards the detailed characteristics of single motor unit potentials. The electromyographic recording is done intramuscularly by means of standardized concentric needle electrodes.
