Electrochemical investigations of the anodic oxidation of ethyl xanthate to diethyl dixanthogen on platinum, gold, copper, and galena electrodes show that the oxidation proceeds through an adsorbed xanthate radical. The adsorption step can be studied separately from the overall reaction on galena and is foundto obey Elovich adsorption kinetics. The dixanthogen is not chemisorbed but builds upto multilayers on the electrode sur-face. The oxidation is accompanied by a change in thesurface of the electrodes from a hydrophilic to a hydro-phobic condition. It is concluded that mineral flotationwith xanthate collectorsproceeds through the electrooxidation of xanthate, oxygen hying required to provide a cathodic process.
