Materials and Methods Materials. Wheatgerm was from Niblack Foods, Rochester, NY Biochemicals were products of Sigma. Radiolabeled amino acids (specific activity in Ci/mmol) were obtained as follows:[3H] phenylalanine (16.1),-proline (26.6),-tyrosine (49.5),-valine (12.5), NEN;[3H] lysine (7), ICN;[^ argi-nine (0.310),-isoleucine (0.306),-leucine (0.303),-serine (0.162), NEN;[35S] methionine (491), NEN; 14C-labeled amino acid mixture (individual from 0.102 to 0.420; contained no asparagine, cysteine, glutamine, methionine, or tryptophan), NEN. Source of antibiotics was as follows: streptomycin and ne-omycin (Sigma); paromomycin, paromamine, and butirosin (Dr. H. Machamer, Parke, Davis and Co.); neamine (Dr. G. Whitfield, The Upjohn Co.); livídomycins A and B (Dr. K. Price, Bristol Laboratories); gentamicins A, B, Bj, Ci, C2, and Cía (Dr. G. Wagman, Sobering Corp.); bluensomycin, neo-mycins B and C, kanamycins, A, B, and C (Dr. H. Taber, University of Rochester). When used alone, the symbols Pm and Nm imply the usual commercial forms of the drugs. For Pm, this is a mixture of Pm I and Pmll. For Nm, this is a mixture of NmB and NmC with a small amount of neamine (also called NmA).
