Examines the relationship between how mental health (MH) providers are reimbursed for services and the level and form of services provided. Legislative and regulatory actions to change the reimbursement system may influence the behavior of MH providers. Research findings in health economics are used to develop a theoretical model that illustrates the desired characteristics of an MH provider reimbursement system. This model demonstrates that providers should not be paid on the basis of costs incurred, and that how providers of MH services should be paid depends on the relationship they have with patients and other health care providers. HMOs and other reimbursement systems that capitate all forms of MH services are likely to be superior than reimbursement systems such as Diagnosis Related Groups that only fix payment for certain services.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
