Atrial natriuretic peptides (ANP) are a family ofpeptides, which were originally isolated from atrial tissue but have now been found in the cardiac ventricles and various locations in the brain. lJ The initial studies that characterized the effects of ANP were based on acute injections of microgram quantities of material. These studies indicated that ANP was a potent diuretic and natriuretic agent and also caused a simultaneous reduction in mean arterial pressure (MAP) without a reflex increase in heart rate.'This combination of actions, together with the fact that endogenous release of ANP into plasma is primarily controlled by atrial pres~ ure,~'~ quickly led to the concept that ANP was involved in the physiological regulation of body fluid balance. The purpose of this chapter is to review the evidence relating ANP levels to mechanisms controlling body fluids, with the primary emphasis on interactions between ANP and mechanisms that control plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP), plasma renin activity (PRA), and water intake.
