These two volumes represent a tremendously ambitious undertaking. The two authors, both general pathologists highly trained in ophthalmology, have gathered a number of experts who present us with many chapters dealing primarily with the pathophysiology of ocular tissues. The most modern aspects of pathobiology, including immunopathology, electron microscopy, molecular genetics, are incorporated. The approach is novel and extremely useful. Although some of the contributors are ophthalmologists, many are general pathologists or come from other biological areas (microbiology, biochemistry, and so on). The primary approach is to discuss a group of systemic diseases (eg, metabolic diseases, infectious diseases) and then describe in detail the ocular involvement in these conditions. This gives an excellent breadth and depth to the discussion. Most of the chapters are extremely well written, and the illustrations are more than adequate. One of the great assets of the book are the numerous references. This book may not be
