THE EFFECT OF ALCOHOL-USE ON WAGES

The adverse effects of excessive alcohol use receive much attention. For example, economists have examined the relationship between the legal drinking age and alcohol use, and the resulting impact on youth motor vehicle fatalities (Cook and Tauchen, 1984; Coate and Grossman, 1986; Saffer and Grossman, 1987a, 1987b). On the other hand, evidence from the health literature exists that moderate alcohol use may have beneficial physical and psychological effects (Turner, Bennett, and Hernandez, 1981; Baum-Baicker, 1985a, 1985b). One of the largest possible effects of alcohol use is on wages received in the labour market. Does alcohol use act primarily as an illness or disability, producing the standard result of reduced productivity and wages (Luft, 1975; Bartel and Taubman,. 1979; Chirikos and Nestel, 1985)? Or do the beneficial effects of alcohol use carry over to the labour market, raising productivity and wages? In this paper, we provide an initial investigation of the effect of alcohol use on wages using a sample of US workers from the Quality of Employment Survey. Separate wage equations are estimated for drinkers and nondrinkers among both males and females. In addition, the drinking decision is made endogenous by estimating a probability of drinking equation and a correction for self-selection bias is employed.
