In a pure-bred herd of Ayrshire cattle, three calves of dif- ferent parentage and born in successive years developed hindleg paralysis; in one, the forelegs were also involved. Two animals were examined post-mortem. Bilateral malacia occurred in the grey matter of the cervical and lumbar en- largements in one animal. In the other, malacia affected the lumbar enlargement, but in the grey matter of the cervical enlargement there was unilateral focal gliosis. The cause of the condition was not established. The pure-bred Ayrshire herd consisted of 180 milkers and 150 young stock. During winter months, adult cattle were fed silage and concentrates but not hay. All were dressed with an organophosphorus warble fly preparation (Prolate: Coo- per)inNovember. During 1978,1979, and 1980, threecalves became paralyzed although only two (calves A and B) were presented for examination. All three animals were normal at birth and capable of walking, but within 10 days they became weak in the hind- legs and unable to stand. Calf A had febrile episodes and was given terramycin.
