A close relationship between auroral displays and polar magnetic disturbances has been recognized for many years (Harang, 1951; Heppner, 1954; Khorosheva, 1961). It is, however, only recently that large-scale auroral displays over the entire polar region and their detailed relationships with the associated geomagnetic activity have become clear. In this chapter, we shall examine individual features of auroral displays and only those geomagnetic disturbances under or near auroras. In Chapter 3, we shall study geomagnetic disturbances associated with the auroral substorm by examining magnetic records collected from stations widely distributed over the entire Northern Hemisphere.
