Sets of orthogonal polynomials on the multinomial distribution generalizing the polynomials of KravhJ~(1929) axe derived. These polynomials are applied to determine joint distributions of multinomial variables when they are the row and column sums of a contingency table and when they are sums of identically distributed multinomhl variables with some held in common. The distribution of the entries in a contingency table is studied and the relations with classical work noted.
