The dramatic differences in underwater capabilities between vertebrate divers and nondivers have long intrigued layman and biologist alike and have led to the establishment of a sound understanding of the physiological and morphological adjustments that support the diving habit (1). Although weare not as knowledgeable about the metabolic and enzymatic adaptations of diving animals, the overall organization of metabolism is fairly clear. Thus, it is well known that in the normal, non-diving state the preferred fuel is fat. Values of RQ (the ratio of respiratory
