1, 8-Diphenylnaphthalene (2) has been prepared by reaction of 8-phenyl-AV-octal-l-one (0) with phenyl-magnesium bromide followed by dehydration and dehydrogenation. 1, 7-Diphenylnaphthalene (8) has been sim-ilarly obtained by reaction of 7-phenyl-l-tetralone (9) with phenylmagnesium bromide followed by dehydration and dehydrogenation. The physical properties of 1, 8-diphenylnapthalene (2) are consistent with the hypothesis that this molecule exists in a ground state conformation in which the two benzene rings are parallel to one an-other and perpendicular to the plane of the naphthalene ring.
