Reviews behavioral work on the development of speech perception in humans and relates the findings to the ontogeny of auditory/communicative abilities in infrahumans and to neurobiological substrates. Specialized biological predispositions are suggested to underly the fundamental characteristics of speech perception. Developmental changes are examined from the initial state of the infant's ability to process speech sounds to postnatal changes, with a focus on cross-language speech perception.
