Given the historical shift from an 8-4 educational system to the currently more popular 6-3-3 or 6-6 educational system and the increasing interest in the type of school appropriate for early adolescents, the results of a longitudinal study of sixth grade students going into seventh grade in either an eighth grade top school or a three year junior high are reported. Several significant differences in orientation are noted even at the sixth grade level. Differential changes between sixth and seventh grade in the student's self-esteem, participation in extracurricular activities, and victimization experiences are presented and discussed in light of the perceived anonymity of the different seventh grade environments.
