Earlier studies in this laboratory revealed that the collodion agglutination test was especially valuable in differentiating primary histoplasmosis from bacterial or viral pneumonias. The production of uniform lots of particles, however, was a serious handicap in the test's reproducibility, and particles had to be sensitized daily just prior to use in the test. Recently, a commercial preparation of histoplasmin sensitized latex particles became available which after dilution in saline as directed could be added directly to dilutions of sera. In the current studies this preparation was tested with sera from 50 cases of histoplasmosis in varying stages of the infection. Reactions compared favorably with those obtained with the best lots of collodion particles prepared and sensitized in this laboratory. Sera from certain types of histoplasmosis were negative and these are also described. The availability of such an antigen should make the agglutination test for histoplasmosis immediately accessible to every laboratory, thereby increasing the number of cases definitively diagnosed during the acute, primary phase and eliminating the delay in obtaining results currently necessitated by the shipping of sera to other more highly specialized laboratories. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: Authors
