Canola (Brassica rapa or Brassica napus) production in Canada is about 6.2 million t (2003), with over 98% grown in the three Prairie Provinces. About 4.6 million ha of land are under canola production, with average yield of 1.35 t haą1. Along with increases in yield and N content in canola seed, decreases in oil content have also been reported with the use of N fertilizer (Lickfett et al., 1999; Jackson, 2000; Brennan et al., 2000). Few studies have investigated the performance of canola grown in soil receiving long-term livestock manure. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of longterm heavy cattle manure application on the relationships between oil and nitrogen content of canola seed.
