What is a song? A song is a journey with a threshold of doorways. Through a direct and transparent process of confronting each doorway, I recall songs that I had once known as a child and uncover a renewed relation with my direct family and distant ancestors. From my intuitive young self, I move closer to voices that arise out of unknown realms, imaginative worlds, associations and people that I attune to. Moving along these doorways, I am often reminded of a quality of softness, a sense of rootedness and a rejuvenating flow of attention in and around me. Suddenly I feel warmth in my heart, an urge to sing. A song emerges from far off in my stream of consciousness. A sense of fluidity and flow around different parts of my body comes alive. A musical note appears on the tip of my tongue. I call and greet it as if like an old friend. The song arrives. I respond. I continue singing it, yet letting it sing me. There is a continuous flow in me, even in silence. The song begins to conduct itself as if I am following the flow of a life-river in me. From this point on, the song is unpredictable and changeable. The journey involves something beyond me, a conversation happens between I–I, one part of my self to another. While singing, I take care of my ‘self’; simultaneously, my body responds to the subtle changes–I hear, I sing, I question, I respond, and I am heard, I am sung, I am answered, I am the response. A pause in singing, I see a bird fly past the window. I begin to perceive in me a yearning, a hidden source for the next song.Who owns a song? When a song is being possessed and claimed by someone, it becomes a commodity. I am speaking of song that is of anonymous source. When a song is ‘own-less’, it exists and transmits in those who sing, and those who listen. What is left behind in singing are its echoes and resonances. Though a song can be passed on from person to person, or through digital transmission and storage (owning), it lives and resounds most strongly in the memories and corporeality of people. When a song is being sung and heard, an imaginative world can be evoked in those who have experienced and interconnected through the song.
