process in person memory. Sixteen undergraduate and graduate students were asked to study first a set of positive or negative trait descriptions ascribed to an imaginary person. Then they studied a list of behavioral descriptions of the person under the instruction to rate each behavior for the degree of congruency with their currently emerging impression. Analysis of the congruency ratings and recall performances revealed that the initial impression was modified little by little through the interaction with the subsequent information, and that subjective congruency of information with the emerging impression facilitated the recall process.
