George Frederic Still ( 1868194 I : Fig. I ) was born in a working-class suburb of London. of Cornish stock. He was educated at Cambridge where he took a first in the classics. After his medical training at Guy's Hospital. he became a house physician at the Hospital for Sick Children. Great Orniond Strcct. He remained on the staff of this hospital for over 30 years. Still was the first physician in England to continc his practice to the diagnosis and treatment ofdiseases ofchildren, and thus he may be considered to be the founder of the specialty of pediatrics in that country. A small, thin, wiry man. Still cultivated some eccentricities and remained a bachelor, devoted to his mother. It was whilc hc was only a registrar that he published his article.
