Dr. Joshi recently presented his interesting experience with a drug information unit (DIU) at a university hospital in Nepal [1]. In this letter, we describe our service and discuss whether or not there are substantial differences between Dr. Joshi's service, which is based in a developing country, and ours which is located in an industrialized country. With about 2600 agents available on the German drug market [2], it is virtually impossible for physicians to be familiar with the relevant details of all drugs encountered in private practice or hospitals. Furthermore, to collect objective knowledge required in a specific situation of drug therapy is usually very difficult. It is a key task for clinical pharmacology [3, 4] to provide such information.
