A single gastric-esophageal probe, 5 mm in diameter, with 2 transducers mounted near the tip can be used to measure transdiaphragmatic pressure in 32 normal human subjects, 5 patients with emphysema and 3 patients with respiratory muscle abnormalities. The transducers are linear up to at least 200 cmH2O pressure and provide equal deflections for positive and negative pressures. The method is shown to give results comparable to the standard procedure using 2 balloon-tipped catheters, 1 in the stomach and 1 in the esophagus.
