Degradation patterns during natural decay of wood were studied by CPMAS C-13 NMR and compared with those produced in solid-state fermentation with ligninolytic fungi. Decrease of lignin C-13 NMR signals was observed during the natural decay of ulmo wood (Eucryphia cordifolia) by Ganoderma australe, giving rise to a material used as cattle feed. In the natural conditions studied, this white-rot fungus can remove essentially all of the lignin, in contrast with brown-rot decay which destroyed the carbohydrate components of wood to leave a residue of almost pure lignin. Changes in wood and straw constituents after solid-state fermentation with ligninolytic fungi were comparatively less intense, but increases in substrate digestibility were obtained. Different degradation patterns were found after wheat straw transformation by Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus eryngii. The latter produces preferential removal of lignin and slight loss of plant carbohydrates.
