The inverse problem we consider is to reconstruct the shape of an obstacle from the knowledge of the far field pattern for the scattering of incident time-harmonic acoustic or electromagnetic waves. It occurs in a variety of applications such as nondestructive testing, ultrasound tomography and seismic imaging and is difficult to solve since it is nonlinear and improperly posed. In this survey we outline the three different methods which are available in the literature for proving uniqueness theorems in inverse scattering problems for impenetrable and penetrable obstacles. At the end we will mention a few open uniqueness problems.
