This article draws on a recent review of the relevant literature published over the past ten years. It gives a brief overview of the evidence, both quantitative and qualitative, about the quality of teachers' classroom assessment practices, about the effectiveness of good formative assessment in promoting pupils' achievements and attitudes, and about the features of classroom assessment which seem to be important in securing effectiveness. In the longer term, there is a need to develop better theories for formative assessment as a basis for further development of practice. But it is also argued that there is an immediate need to re-frame policy to develop and support classroom assessment as a means of raising standards. The article is based on a talk given at the ASE INSET Services conference in 1998.
