This chapter describes a mixed-methods approach incorporating qualitative case study and focused ethnographic methods as well as quantitative data from neuropsychological tests, self-report questionnaires, and physiological measures. This mixed-methods approach was used in a home-based observational study of people affected by two types of dementia: the more common memory-led Alzheimer's disease and posterior cortical atrophy, a rare form of dementia that mostly affects the processing of visual and spatial information. The chapter discusses the context for the study and the research questions and design before outlining how the data was collected and integrated for analysis. It explores methodological issues researchers may face when conducting extended observations in the homes of people with dementia and their care partners, as well as the unique insights that can emerge when integrating mixed methods of data collection.
