To the Editor: Passive immunization has been used to prevent and treat many bacterial and viral illnesses', 2 and has been shown to prevent the infection of chimpanzees with HIV-1.3'4 Given these prece¬ dents,^ is likely that passive immunotherapy may be useful in (a) preventing HIV infection in health care workers after acci¬ dental exposure,(b) blocking transmission of HIV from the infected mother to her fetus, and (c) treating previously HIV-infected patients. In all of these instances, the optimal treatment would seem to be with an immunoglobulin preparation which can be administered intramuscularly and which would neutralize a majority, if not all, HIV-1 strains. A preparation of one or several human monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) could potentially meet all of these criteria.
