It is axiomatic that one cannot obtain the right answer until one has asked the right question. Most of our current knowledge of cancer in general, and no less of the lipid-cancer interaction in particular, seems to consist of a vast accumulation of answers (clinical, experimental and epidemiological data) with little or no clear understanding of what the truly relevant questions might be. Significant light, however, could possibly be shed upon this otherwise gloomy scene by the formulation and consideration of some general or unifying conceptual hypothesis.'That the occurrence, growth and development of cancer is dependent upon an altered lipid status', is one such hypothesis and this article will develop this theme further. My aim is not merely to catalogue current knowledge (ie the answers we already have), but rather to stimulate further critical questioning, and to encourage appropriate research based on those questions of agreed importance.
