In the UK the financial analysis of the cost of health services showed the massive growth of health costs facing us if we did not invest in reducing demand as well as improving supply. Health services the report said must be more productive and people must become more fully engaged in their own health. Levels of public engagement in relation to their health are high. Life expectancy increases go beyond current forecasts, health status improves dramatically and people are confident in the health system and demand high quality care. Patient and public involvement is supported by legislation and by a number of formal structures. The aim is to support patient engagement with their own care and in choices about their care at an individual level. Co-creating health and health services is a lot more complicated than building a flat-pack wardrobe. Health is not a commodity which we collect from the doctor and bring home. But it is not only for those who need us in this decade that we must act. We must plan too for our children and grandchildren. If our health care systems are not to collapse under the weight of long-term conditions, increased demand and spiraling costs we need the flat-pack patient to lead the way.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)
