As described in a previous paper, marine microorganisms taking part in the precipitation of calcium carbonate were divided into four groups on the basis of main morphological characteristics. Various methods of taxonomy for gram positive, catalase positive and aerobic cocci have been proposed by many workers since Cohn established the genus Micrococcus in 1872. In this paper, a taxonomic investigation concerning 16 strains of cocci was made according to the method of Bergey's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology (7 ed.). The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. All the strains of cocci belonged to the genus Micrococcus by the cell arrangement and form of sugar metabolism. 2. Sixteen strains of cocci were identified as species of Micrococcus rubens (5 strains), M. conglomeratus (5 strains), M. roseus (2 strains), M. flavus (2 strains) or M. freudenreichii (2 strains) respectively.
