Changes in absorption that occur in stained giant axons during action potentials were used to monitor action potentials and synaptic potentials in cell bodies of the supraesophageal ganglion of the barnacle, Balanus nubilus. The ganglia were incubated for 15 min with a merocyanine-oxazolone dye that had given relatively large signals in experiments on squid axons. The smallest synaptic potential that could be detected was .apprx. 5 mV. It was possible to monitor action potential activity in 14 neurons simultaneously and individually.
