precancerous phases, it is necessary to understand normal growth cycles and age variations in all parts of the skin. In this paper, stages in the normal hairdevelopment cycle are under consideration. Dry (1926) described in the mouse the basic general stages of hair development and offered the terms "anagen" (1-17 days) for active proliferation; "catagen" (17-19 days) for cessation of proliferation and pigment deposition and for formation of the club and germ; and "telogen" for the resting stage. Butcher (1934; Johnson, Butcher, and Bevelander, 1945) emphasized that in the rat there are cycles of activity and rest. For experimental use, at least, we feel that greater detail in these stages is of value, and Dry's anagen stage has been divided into six rather precise and recognizable
