ABSTRACT In the mouse, natural resistance to infection with unrelated intracellular parasites is controlled by the Bcg locus. With an positional cloning approach, a candidate gene for Bcg has been isolated. This gene encodes for a novel macrophage-specific transport protein, Nramp, which is altered in innately susceptible animals.
