This study explores the effect of library shelf sign designs on users' search time length using a virtual reality (VR) library system that was developed by the authors to test library designs. An experiment was performed with 20 participants in 2018. The results showed that sign designs affected users' search time length. Signs featuring library classification reduced users' search time length by 80 seconds on average in comparison with signs featuring sequential shelf numbers that were not related to subjects. It was also revealed that the system is effective for testing library sign designs.
