Babesiosis in domestic livestock is an important disease of many tropical and subtropical countries. Considerable progress has been made towards the identification of babesial protein antigens that stimulate humoral and cellular immunity that may be useful as components of a subunit vaccine.’-’Among these are a multigene family of 58-60 kDa proteins, designated rhoptry associated-protein (s) 1, or RAP-1, that are associated with both the merozoite surface and rhoptries of the apicomplexan protozoan parasites Babesia bovis and B. bigemina.”’Proteins produced by specialized organelles of the merozoite apical complex that include rhoptries, micronemes, spherical bodies, and dense granules are believed to play a major role in host erythrocyte invasion or possibly egression.’* Many of these apical-complex-associated proteins have been targeted for vaccine development against human malarial parasites. 13 The native form of the 58-kDa RAP-1 protein of B. bigemina was shown to confer partial protective immunity in~ attle.~ Similarly, the native form of B. bovis RAP-1, anis work was supported in part by the United States Department of Agriculture-BARD grant 1855-90R, the National Institutes of Health grant A130136, the USDA NRICGP grants 92-37204-8180 and 93-37206-9075, and a Fullbright Research Scholarship awarded to SDR.
