Experiments were performed in 15 lichen species [Umbilicaria pustulata, Cladonia coniocraea, Leptogium schraderi, Cladonia foliacea, Dermatocarpon miniatum, Platismatia glauca, Parmelia perlata, Hypogymnia physodes, Ramalina siliquosa, Dermatocarpon fluviatile, Usnea subfloridana, Evernia prunastri, Lichina pygmaea, Cladonia rangiformis, Peltigera horizontalis] from a range of different habitats, to compare cellular cation location in desiccation-stressed and -unstressed material. Desiccation caused significant intracellular K and Mg loss in some species; loss can be related to water availability in the natural habitat. During leakage, some cation immobilization occurs on cell wall cation exchange sites. The proportion immobilized depends on the nature of the cation released and the nature of cations already present on exchange sites. Desiccation-stressed lichens can partially or wholly recover their original cation distribution by humid environment incubation. Desiccation resistance and recovery indices for lichens are proposed. Comparisons can be made with bryophytes [Hypnum cupressiforme, Lophocolea cuspidata] and conclusions can be drawn about their respective micro-environments.
